A primary focus of my 30 year career has been teaching and tutoring college students and adults the academic skills they need to thrive as scholars in their disciplines. I have worked at the Villanova University and Bryn Mawr College Writing Centers, served as adjunct faculty at Temple University and Bryn Mawr College, and taught at other institutions such as Harcum College and U.C. Berkeley Extension School. My degree in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of Other Languages) gives me the added skills to support multilingual writers and learners.
My students and I meet at their convenience, working on the individual skills they want to improve. These include:
- Information literacy, such as using library databases for research, incorporating research into your writing, and avoiding plagiarism.
- Strong, effective academic writing in all its genres such as personal essays, argumentative essays, reflection papers, lab reports, annotated bibliographies, research paper, masters theses, dissertations, conference proposals and articles for publication.
- Executive functioning, time management, reading skills, and email communication skills (how to write to your professor!).
- Writing Process strategies such as planning/pre-writing and self-editing/proofreading.
- Language specific matters including grammar lessons, vocabulary and word choice strategies, and writing conventions.
- Cultural learning and discussion to understand norms of American universities and American-English academic writing.
- Managing long-term, complex projects like dissertations and masters theses.
I have coached thousands of students in dozens of disciplines and on pretty much every kind of writing project assigned by teachers at American universities. My students become more confident and self-sufficient learners while turning in written work they are proud of.

Nancy is very caring and organized to give each individual student the best help! Thank you so much! The best writing teacher!
Nancy – I have some wonderful news, I passed my defense! I wanted to thank you again for all your help this semester, you were so wonderful and patient with me.
Nancy is able to patiently listen to writers who struggle to express their concerns and then clearly guides them through a feasible plan for revisions. I’ve seen her provide possible versions/visions of what successful writing entails, rather than providing unilateral solutions. Nancy fosters a nurturing yet challenging environment by being personable yet professional.
