Professional writing begins and ends with the reader. In my work with corporate clients, nonprofit organizations, graduate students, professors, and other writers, my first goal is to learn about the various audiences for whom they are writing. Who are the primary readers? How about the secondary stakeholders or other indirect audiences? Understanding audience is the first step towards knowing the purpose of the prose.
Once we have identified audience and purpose, clients and I work hand in hand to make sure the final product meets the “3 C’s” of effective communication: that the message is clear, concise, and concrete. We make sure it is engaging and enjoyable to read too!
